Goblin Slayer's second episode surpassed my expectations with some decisions taken. Despite I love to watch goblins being murdered, I would never recommend watching this anime. Also, the relating manga chapters were really disappointing. (Part 1; 2; 3).
For those who have no idea about Goblin Slayer, it is an anime based on a manga which is getting a lot of attention nowadays for all the gore and rape scenes displayed. The plot is about the main character, the Goblin Slayer, a silver rank hero who exclusively commit himself to low-class-goblin hunting quests.
The anime's second episode is very different from the manga. Starting with the favorable changes, I like how the anime mixed two manga chapters in one. Comparing with the manga, the anime reached a nice rhythm by mixing three different manga chapters. In the other hand, I believe the manga's chapters narrating the rise of the Goblin Slayer, his monologue about how much he loves killing goblins, and the assault to the fortress were too slow. Thus, I am glad about that change.
However, the big problem of both anime and manga is how they are showing the goblins. I do not believe that just showing goblins doing abominable acts (rapes) makes them scarier. That is a mistake. I have frequently encountered that opinion on Reddit. I believe that they are showing too much of the goblin society. I must admit that sometimes it is interesting, but I cannot stop noting how simplistic is the world created by the author every time they explain a bit more about the goblins and the world.
But the huge problem is the lack of character development or any value in the victims. The manga constantly shows male characters being ripped apart and female characters being raped. I am not against it by itself. I like bloody series and dark fantasy But the show invests no time to make me care about the characters that are being murdered. Everything looks so meaningless all time.
For example, let's look at the following pages.
We are introduced to a group of heroes. They are quite likable. Then, they are immediately ambushed by goblins. That's all. You do not need to show anything else. I believe that until that point it was a really good sequence of events. However, the manga has this sick necessity of showing goblin rapes as it follows.
Totally unnecesary. Again, showing goblins raping girls is a really dummy way to make the goblins appear scarier. Also, it is an offensive way to address the issue. Rape is a serious problem, so I hate the humoristic and simplistic way adopted by the manga to show those scenes. My main problem with Goblin Slayer is that they are showing rapes for the empty shock effect of watching a goblin rapping a young female adventure.
Since I see no narrative value or purpose, I cannot stop thinking that the author just wants to reach a really weirdo public of teenagers and that really sucks. I may be wrong but I see no justification in those scenes that are too abundant in the manga.
I like dark fantasy. I think that there is a deep connection between horror and fantasy adventures that has not been exploited yet. I love the sensation of fearing a dungeon instead of having an over power hero. But this is just a mix between cheap hentai and an average MMO (but a shitty one, like a pay to win one).
The anime did such a better job with this scenes. Just look at the next images. They just cut the rapes and leave the very end. Smart faggots. The goblins now look scary with all this use of lights and shadows while they jump and dance in the dark.
The anime was more clever. Less literal and leaving more to your imagination. I liked better the scenes shown in the anime because those made the goblins appear more salvages. That reinforces the idea that goblins are a huge problem that no one is taking care in such World. That has been the main conflict so far, especially when they show that it is a really underrated work, notwithstanding that the poor people and rookies are the one suffering the most.
In conclusion, both series are just showing rape for either an empty shock or to target some hyper puber teenagers. The anime at least did a better job by cutting those scenes. At this point, I do not know if I will keep watching this trash, goblin trash.
